The small coastal community of Niantic, Connecticut obtained an American the Beautiful grant to enhance their center block. This project will be used as the prototype design standard for future streetscape enhancement work along Main Street.
Landscape Elements LLC has provided consulting services for the initial conceptual design providing a schematic layout for streetscape enhancements as well as a series of "materials palettes" for street trees, site furniture and sidewalk and crosswalk pavement surfaces that fit the character of downtown Niantic.
Work for this project was coordinated through the Design Committee of the Niantic Main Street organization along with staff from the planning and engineering departments of the town of East Lyme. Issues that were addressed included:
- locating lights and street trees away overhead utility wires
- removing existing street tress that are in decline and are causing sidewalk upheaval
- replacing existing trees with varieties that are appropriate to narrow sidewalks and a coastal environment
- providing handicapped accessibility
- creating curbside appeal and enhancement for area businesses
- providing pavement materials that reflect town character and meet town and CTDOT requirements
