Guilford Village Walkway - Phase 1
Guilford, Connecticut

Project Scope: Feasibility study for a walkway project in an ecologically and historically significant area

Landscape Architecture

Landscape Architecture Landscape Elements, LLC and wetland specialist Linda A. Steere of Applied Bio-systems, Inc. prepared a feasibility study for the Guilford Preservation Alliance and the Town of Guilford. This study evaluated potential routes for a walkway connecting the historic Guilford Green with the train depot in the southern end of the town. The proposed walkway route is roughly a two-mile loop that provides users with a pedestrian connection between the train station and the town center as well as providing links to significant historic, cultural and ecological sites in the area.

The walkway route brings visitors to significant historic structures and landscapes in the village center including the Henry Whitfield House and State Museum, a National Historic Landmark, the Dorothy Hyland House and the Thomas Griswold House. Two other key historic features include the historic Rollwood Farm - Woodruff property which was the site of a working farm up to the 1960's and the 1870's vintage railroad buildings at the train depot.

Significant ecological areas within the project site include the Guilford Agricultural Society's Fairgrounds which are maintained as mown agricultural fields and Sluice Creek with its associated wetlands. The creek is now almost stagnant having filled with silt deposits and invasive plant material. The study proposes that the creek be restored to a flowing water body so that views to the historic agricultural fields can be restored and storm water flooding and mosquito problems can be abated. The complete feasibility study is available online at the website for the Guilford Preservation Alliance at www.guilfordpreservation.org/.
