The owner's of an existing 78-acre farmstead in Bolton, Massachusetts required a landscape renovation that respected the historic character of the property, while creating outdoor spaces that were suited to their lifestyle.
The site is the historic Whitcomb Inn dating back to the early 18th century. The Owners' currently maintain the property as a horse farm with the inn serving as their residence and the barn used for boarding horses.
Some of the goals addressed in the landscape master plan included: screening lights and noise from the nearby highway; planning for replacement of diseased trees along the entrance road; creating a private patio in the front garden; providing an herb garden; designing a colorful rear garden with seasonal interest and creating beds and perennial borders along the stone walls for easier mowing and maintenance.
The plan utilized plant material that is drought tolerant, insect and disease resistant, mostly deer resistant and suited to a colonial landscape. The patio and front walk materials used include brick salvaged from the barn chimney and old pieces of granite salvaged from the property.
