Hope Associates, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and conservation of environmentally sensitive land along waterways. They have concentrated their focus on the preservation of properties in the Pawtuxet River Watershed and along the Pawtuxet River in Scituate, Rhode Island. Elena M. Pascarella. RLA, ASLA was hired as a consultant to complete a feasibility study for a river trail and park along the Pawtuxet River on two of their properties that abutted the river.
This feasibility study examined the historical, cultural and natural resources of their properties analyzed the recreational potential for each parcel and evaluated the feasibility of connecting the two parcels with a pedestrian bridge. A professional team that included a wetland specialist, historic architect and a civil engineer provided input with respect to the project's potential. An approach was taken that preserved historic railroad artifacts, enhanced the area's cultural character, was structurally sound and provided the most environmentally sensitive route.
Phase 1 design work focused on obtaining accurate survey and wetland data and providing a conceptual design that laid out walking trails in the 30-acre southern parcel and a small park on a one-acre parcel in Hope Village. A second phase of work provided Hope Associates with Contract Documents for the construction of a park on Main Street in Hope Village. The Main Street Park was dedicated in spring 2005 as the Hope Village Green.
