H. Goddard estate. The Goddard's, a prominent Rhode Island family, hired the Olmsted Brothers to design the master plan for their estate. The current park design is in keeping with most of the original Olmsted Brothers plan. Due to the number and variety of mature trees, the site of the Goddard mansion that burned down in the 1960's was chosen as the site of a small arboretum. Many of the newer park facilities including the beach, the bathhouse, the boat ramp, the 9-hole golf course and pro-shop and the horse-show ring and stables were constructed under state ownership from 1950 through 1960. This master plan addressed issues that were a result of these earlier construction projects and included: Better traffic circulation, parking and park entrance control as well as better site accessibility for emergency vehicles Enhanced landscaping around the golf course Enhanced beach and bathhouse facilities Consolidation of park maintenance and park police facilities Inclusion of a natural interpretive center to be tied into the site's existing horse and hiking trails as well as other existing natural features Definition of the park boundaries and the park's relationship to the neighborhood The overall focus of the master plan was to accommodate the many and varied active and passive recreational uses for this park, which is heavily utilized by the greater Providence population, while maintaining the history and character of the original Olmsted Brothers plan. » Back to Case Studies Landscape Elements LLC · P.O.
