Fort Adams State Park - Master Plan Newport, Rhode Island Project Scope: Master Plan to update recreational facilities at oceanfront state park

In the late 1970's, the State of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management acquired a number of former government-owned sites through GSA disbursement and Bureau of Outdoor Recreation funds. These sites became part of the Bay Island Park System due to their locations along Narragansett Bay and their accessibility via water transportation. Fort Adams State Park is a 49-acre facility located on a peninsula that juts into Newport Harbor. The site has had historical importance as a military fort and facility since the 1700's.
The master plan for the park incorporates new recreational facilities into a site which still houses the 1700 historic fort as well as 19th century homes that provide housing for Newport Naval War College faculty and administrators. Visitors to the park can enjoy the beach, historic tours of the fort and the former summer residence of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, picnicking, and boating. The old military parade grounds were "recreated" after 1950 military housing was demolished and new competition-level soccer fields were created in this location. The park has been home to many special events including the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals. The many construction phases for implementation of the park master plan included environmental site assessments for hazardous materials, demolition of old navy housing units, restoration of docks and boat ramps, adaptive re-use of existing storage facilities into park bathhouse facilities, and construction of parking areas, soccer fields and beach facilities. » Back to Case Studies |
