Historic landscape consultant, Elena M. Pascarella was contacted by architectural historian Ann Street to review the gardens and grounds of the Varnum House Museum for a landscape restoration plan. Ms. Street is the daughter of the late Mrs. Helen-Marie Street who was a founding member of the Varnum House Museum as well as President of the Varnum Continental Ladies. This project was initiated through donations made in memory of Mrs. Street.
The resulting Cultural Landscape Report provides an evaluation of the project site within its historical context and significance, reviewing the existing conditions of all landscape elements and the potential for restoration versus renovation. The report then presents recommended design alternatives, treatment plans and management goals. All recommendations were made based on the financial and volunteer capabilities of this small, non-profit organization. The report follows the "Guide to Cultural Landscape Reports" as published by the US Department of the Interior, National Park Service in 1998.
Implementation of the treatment plan has included the removal of invasive plant species and fertilization and pruning of existing trees to ensure a healthy arboretum. Plantings that were not appropriate for the selected period of treatment were removed and replaced with historically appropriate plantings.
