The Rhode Island Landscape Inventory study grew out of 1987 legislation directing the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management to establish and maintain a list of scenic areas in the state. The study evaluated the scenic characteristics of the Rhode Island landscape based on criteria that were developed to evaluate specific landscape features. Sites were selected from a review of USGS topographic maps and a compilation of questionnaires that were sent to planning and design professionals in all of Rhode Island's 39 cities and towns. Potential scenic areas were then field checked by a team of three professionals who rated them based on the criteria and documented them through black and white photographs and color slides.
Ratings were tabulated for each site and those sites with the highest scores were short-listed as "most highly scenic". These sites were identified on individual USGS quadrants as well as a comprehensive map of the state. The final report was sent to officials in all of Rhode Island's cities and towns to be used as a resource for future open space, recreational and comprehensive planning projects. The mapping data has been digitized into the RI Geographic Information System (RIGIS) and can be obtained from the RIGIS website.
